Audition Materials

Guest Conductor

  • Video recording of up to 10 minutes of rehearsal (including verbal instruction)
  • Video recording of up to 15 minutes of performance, ideally a front view

       (Conducting videos may be of chamber ensemble or full orchestra)

Violin and Viola

  • Any major scale. Play 3 octaves: slowly for tone and intonation (3 to a bow); faster for technique and intonation (6 to 12 to a bow)
  • One movement from a major concerto or sonata
  • Fellows only:  One movement from a Bach Sonata or Partita (violin) / one movement from a Bach Cello Suite (viola) and Beethoven, Symphony No. 3, 1st movement

Cello

  • Any 3-octave major or minor scale with arpeggio
  • An etude from Popper, Piatti, Duport, Grutzmacher or Schroeder
  • One prelude from the Six Suites for Cello of J.S. Bach
  • Fellows only:  An extra movement of unaccompanied Bach and Beethoven, Symphony No. 3, 1st movement

Bass

  • One required scale: Any 2 octave major or minor scale with arpeggio
  • One movement from a Sonata or Suite
  • Fellows only: Beethoven, “Symphony No. 9 Mvt. IV”: Recitative followed by 16 of the Ode to Joy (the second “Allegro assai”)

Woodwinds

Flute, Oboe, Clarinet and Bassoon

  • Two contrasting etudes or solos or movements from a concerto or sonata which best demonstrate your technique and musicality.
  • Fellows only: Beethoven Symphony No 3, 4th movement, Measures 431 to the end (Presto).

Brass

Horn, Trumpet, Trombone and Tuba

  • Two contrasting etudes or solos (or movements from a concerto or sonata) which best demonstrate your tone, range, technique, and lyric ability.
  • Fellows only: Horn: Tchaikovsky #5 solo, Trumpet: Respighi - Pines of Rome; offstage solo, Trombone: Mozart, "Tuba Mirum" from Requiem and Tuba: Bach-Bixby, "Bach for Tuba"

Percussion

Snare

  • Demonstrate roll in various dynamics (pp crescendo to FF and decrescendo to pp)
  • Perform an etude and/or a rudimental solo.
  • Fellows: by invitation only

Mallets

  • Perform both: a 2 and 4 mallet solo either on the marimba, vibraphone or xylophone (free choice of instrument for each of the two solos).
  • Fellows: by invitation only
